A 100-page book in 16-page signatures becomes 112 pages. Those 12 blanks are paper you pay for, and better placed deliberately than discovered.

Derived rather than tabulated, so it works for any extent. Sheet 1 of an 8-page booklet carries pages 8 and 1 on its outer side.

How this imposition & signature calculator works
Presses do not print pages, they print sheets — and a sheet gets folded, which means the pages on it are not in reading order. A sheet folded once carries four pages, folded twice carries eight, folded three times sixteen. That folded unit is a signature, and a book is a stack of them gathered in sequence.
This is why page counts want to be multiples of sixteen. A signature is bought and folded as a unit whether or not it is full, so a 100-page book printed in sixteens occupies seven signatures — 112 pages — and twelve of them are blank. You paid for the paper and the press time either way. Designing to 96 or 112 rather than trimming to 100 is where the saving is.
For saddle-stitched work the imposition follows from the nesting. Sheets sit inside each other, so the outermost carries the very first and very last pages, and each sheet inward moves one page in from each end. For sheet i counting outward, the outer side prints pages (N−2i+2) and (2i−1), and the inner side prints (2i) and (N−2i+1). Every sheet's pairs sum to N+1, which is the property that makes the numbers run in order once folded.
Creep is the physical consequence of that nesting. Each sheet is displaced toward the fore-edge by the thickness of everything wrapped around it, so the innermost spread sits furthest out and loses the most when the fore-edge is trimmed. On thick paper or a high page count that shift is millimetres, which is enough to cut into a folio or crop an image edge.

16 is standard for book work. 4 gives you the saddle-stitch case, where every folded sheet is one signature.
Step 3: Read the blanks and the order
Decide where the blanks go rather than leaving it to chance, and use the creep figures to shift inner spreads back toward the spine.

- A 20-page A5 booklet printed on A4 needs five folded sheets, and the table gives the page pairs for each one.
- Checking creep on a thick booklet
- A 48-page booklet on 120gsm shifts the centre spread noticeably. The per-sheet figures show how much to pull the inner pages in.
Why sixteen, and why it still matters
Sixteen is not a convention someone chose; it is how many times a sheet can usefully be folded. Each fold doubles the pages and halves the area, and after four folds the paper is too thick at the spine and the fibres start to crack along the crease. Thirty-two page signatures exist on thin papers, and eight is common on heavy stock, but sixteen is the number that works on most weights.
That physical limit propagated all the way up into how books are commissioned. Word counts, chapter lengths and picture sections are still negotiated against signature boundaries, because dropping from 240 pages to 224 removes a whole signature from the print bill while dropping to 236 removes nothing at all. An editor asking for eight pages to come out is usually asking for half a signature.
Digital printing weakened the rule without breaking it. Short-run digital work can be bound at any extent, so the penalty for an awkward page count is smaller — but as soon as a job is litho-printed in any quantity, the signature is back, and it is cheaper to know that at the layout stage than at the quote stage.

What is a signature?
A single sheet printed on both sides and folded down to a group of pages — usually sixteen. Books are assembled from signatures gathered in order, which is why extents tend to be multiples of that number.
Why does my page count need to be a multiple of 16?
It does not have to be, but anything else means the last signature is partly blank and you pay for it regardless. Going from 100 pages to 96 removes twelve blanks and a chunk of the paper bill; going to 112 fills the signature you were already buying.
Where should the blank pages go?
Deliberately, at the back, is the usual answer. What matters is deciding rather than leaving it — a blank that lands in the middle of a picture sequence is a mistake nobody notices until the book is bound.
What is creep or shingling?
In saddle-stitched work the sheets nest inside each other, so inner spreads are pushed toward the fore-edge by the paper wrapped around them and get trimmed narrower. Compensating means shifting inner pages back toward the spine, which imposition software will do automatically if told the paper caliper.
Why is the page order only shown for saddle stitching?
Because saddle-stitch nesting is geometric and can be derived. Sewn and perfect-bound sections are folded and gathered according to each binder's own scheme, and inventing a plausible-looking order for those would be worse than showing none.
Can I use this to print a booklet at home?
Yes — set the signature size to 4 and the table gives you exactly which pages to put on each side of each sheet. Most print dialogues also have a booklet option that does this for you; the table is useful for checking it got it right.
