Why print arithmetic is unforgiving

Screen work is elastic. A layout that is slightly wrong reflows, an image at the wrong resolution can be swapped, and a mistake noticed after publishing is fixed in minutes. Print has none of that. Once a job is on the plate the numbers are fixed, and the cost of an error is the entire run rather than an afternoon.

That changes which mistakes matter. Nobody has ever reprinted a book because the leading was a point out. Books get reprinted because the spine was calculated from the page count instead of the leaf count, because nobody asked which paper the printer actually had in stock, or because an image was placed at 140% and cleared the resolution check at its original size.

The calculations here are the ones with that shape: cheap to do, expensive to get wrong, and easy to do in your head badly. Each one shows its working, because a number you cannot check is not much more use than a guess.

Ask the printer, then use these

Every figure on these pages depends on something only the printer knows. Caliper varies between paper batches and moves again with humidity. Binding allowances differ between binders. Line screens depend on the press and the stock. Imposition schemes for sewn work are a house style rather than a standard.

So the honest workflow is: get the constraints from whoever is printing it, then use these tools to design against them. That is the opposite of how these calculations are usually presented online, where a single formula is offered as though paper were a constant.

Where a figure is genuinely approximate, these pages say so rather than rounding it into a confident-looking answer. An estimate you know is an estimate is useful. One you mistake for a specification is how a cover comes back wrong.

What survived from the analogue toolkit

Almost all of it. A halftone quality factor is the same calculation whether the screen is made photographically or in software. A signature is still sixteen pages because that is how many times a sheet can usefully be folded. Spine width is still the thickness of the paper stack, and paper is still the same thickness it was.

What changed is that the tables and wheels these calculations lived on stopped being handed out. The knowledge did not become obsolete; it became undocumented, which is a different and more annoying problem. A designer today can find a thousand articles on colour theory and almost nothing on why their page count wants to be a multiple of sixteen.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need any of this if I only design for screen?

The paper and screen size references, probably. The rest only matters when something is being manufactured — but that includes more than books: packaging, signage, exhibition graphics and anything with a printed edge all need trim, bleed and resolution decided properly.

Why do the answers say they are estimates?

Because they are. Paper caliper varies by batch, binding allowances vary by binder, and line screens vary by press and stock. A tool that presents these as exact figures is misrepresenting how print works. Use them to design against, then confirm with the printer before anything is committed.

Where do the formulas come from?

They are standard print production arithmetic — the same relationships the printed tables and calculation wheels carried. Each page explains the derivation rather than just presenting a result, so you can check it against your printer's figures rather than taking it on trust.

Is anything I enter sent to a server?

No. Every tool on this site runs in your browser. There is no back end, so there is nothing that could log or store a page count, a paper spec, or anything else.
