Perfect binding grinds the folds off before gluing, so the text block loses a fraction of a millimetre. Printers usually absorb that in their own allowance.

Every figure here is an estimate. Paper varies between batches and humidity moves it again — get the spine signed off against the printer’s actual stock before the cover goes to plate.

Why use this tool?

Leaves, not pages

A 208-page book has 104 sheets of paper. Halving the page count is the single most common error in this calculation.

Caliper, not grammage

Two papers at 100gsm can differ by half again in thickness. The tool derives caliper from volume basis, or takes the printer's measurement directly.

Three bindings

Perfect, case and saddle stitched — each measured differently, and saddle stitch has creep rather than a spine at all.

How this book spine width calculator works

The spine is as thick as the paper stacked inside it, and the unit of stacking is the leaf — one physical sheet, carrying two pages. So a 208-page book is 104 leaves, and its text block is 104 multiplied by the thickness of one sheet. Using the page count instead doubles the answer, which is the error this tool exists to prevent.

Thickness is not derivable from weight. Grammage tells you mass per square metre; it says nothing about how much air is trapped in the sheet. An uncoated bulky wove and a calendered gloss art at the same weight differ by a third or more in caliper. The bridge between them is volume basis, sometimes called bulk, in cubic centimetres per gram: caliper in microns equals grammage multiplied by volume. So 80gsm at a volume of 1.3 is 104µm, while 80gsm at 0.9 is 72µm — over a hundred leaves, more than three millimetres apart.

Each binding then adds its own material. Perfect binding wraps a cover round the block, so both thicknesses of the cover board sit in the spine measurement. Case binding sets boards either side, typically two to three millimetres each, plus whatever the covering material turns in. Saddle stitching adds nothing, because it is folded rather than glued — there is no flat spine to print on.

What saddle stitching has instead is creep. Sheets nest inside each other, so each one is pushed a little further toward the fore-edge by everything wrapped around it, and the trim cuts the inner spreads narrower. The tool reports how far the innermost spread moves so you can shift its content back toward the spine, or confirm the imposition software is doing it for you.

How to use it

  1. Step 1: Enter the page count

    Pages, not leaves or sheets. Include every page, blanks and endpapers included if they are part of the extent.

  2. Step 2: Pick the paper, or type its caliper

    Use the printer's measured caliper whenever you have it. The stock list is representative, not a substitute for the actual batch.

  3. Step 3: Choose the binding

    Perfect binding needs the cover board; case binding needs the board thickness; saddle stitching gives you creep instead of a spine.

Under about 3mm of text block there is too little edge for perfect binding to hold, and the answer is saddle stitching. Worth knowing before the cover is designed.

Why the printer's number beats yours

Paper is an agricultural product pressed into sheets, and it behaves like one. Caliper varies between batches of nominally identical stock, often by a few per cent. It varies with humidity: paper absorbs moisture from the air and swells, which is why printers condition stock in the pressroom before running it and why a spine measured in a damp warehouse is not the spine you get.

Binders also have their own allowances, and they are not published. Perfect binding grinds the folds off the spine before gluing, which removes a fraction of a millimetre. Case binding needs the covering material to turn in over the boards. A rounded spine measures more across its curve than a flat one does across its width. None of that is derivable from the paper spec.

So the sequence that works is: calculate here to get a number to design against, send the printer your extent and stock, and ask them for the spine measurement they will actually bind to. They will either confirm yours or give you theirs, and either outcome takes one email and saves a reprint. A cover is the one component where being two millimetres out is visible from across a room.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the calculation use leaves rather than pages?

Because a leaf is a physical sheet of paper and a page is one side of one. A 208-page book contains 104 sheets, and it is the sheets that stack up to make the spine. Using the page count gives an answer exactly twice as thick as reality.

Can I work out spine width from paper weight alone?

No, and this is the most common cause of a wrong spine. Grammage is mass per unit area; thickness depends on how bulky the sheet is. You need caliper, or grammage plus volume basis, which is what this tool uses.

What is volume basis or bulk?

A measure of how thick a paper is for its weight, in cubic centimetres per gram. Multiply grammage by volume to get caliper in microns. Uncoated papers run around 1.3, coated art papers nearer 0.9, and specialist bulky book papers up to 1.8 or more.

What about saddle-stitched work?

It has no spine to print on — the fold is the spine. What it has is creep: inner spreads push out toward the fore-edge and get trimmed narrower. The tool reports the shift at the innermost spread so you can compensate.

How accurate is the result?

Good enough to design to and not good enough to commit to. Batch variation, humidity, grinding allowance and binding method all move it. Treat it as the number to work from, then get it confirmed.

Do endpapers and cover count?

Endpapers are part of the extent and should be in the page count. The cover is handled separately — perfect binding puts both its thicknesses in the spine, case binding puts the boards in. Dust jackets sit outside the measurement entirely.
